What Can You Do with RM1 Nowadays?

I bet you heard before phrases like “I could buy a bowl of noodles for less than one ringgit when I was a kid!, “I could watch a movie in the cinema with less than one ringgit!”, and etc. Yes, that is what our parents or grandparents told us, reminding us about how cheap things are in those old days.

As we all know, due to inflation and depreciation in ringgit, one ringgit in the good old days no longer serve the same value anymore. Indeed, it is pretty clear that we couldn’t do much with RM 1 nowadays compared to those old days. So, let’s look into what we can do with 1 ringgit today...

Gardenia Bun & Rolls Delicia Cream Roll

All of these Gardenia Bun are sold at a fixed price of RM 1  in any corner of Malaysia.

Roti Canai (but at limited geographical areas in Malaysia only)

An undeniable fact is that it is becoming harder and harder for us to find a slice of roti canai that sell at one ringgit, however, in certain areas such as rural areas, it’s still possible. Based on news that released by Free Malaysia Today, roti canai prices are expected to increase due to the price of wheat flour has increased. This indicates that there is a high probability it will be impossible for us to find roti canai that sold at RM 1 in the near future.

IKEA Soy Ice-Cream

IKEA Soy Ice-Cream has become an alternative to McDonald’s Sundae Cone when the price of Sundae Cone has hiked from RM 1 to RM 2. Malaysians experienced disappointment when they realized the price has hiked, as their childhood memories associated with the “happiness we buy with 1 ringgit” is no longer available. However, thanks to IKEA that enables us to enjoy an ice cream with less than 1 ringgit!

Nasi Lemak

A basic nasi lemak that is packed in banana leaf and normally sold by the roadside stall. Similar to roti canai, the average price for such a pack for nasi lemak costs around RM 1 to RM 2.50.
